2/7/10 Spring Creek trip
Even though it's Super Bowl Sunday on 2/7. The Spring Creek trip is still on! Thus far we have 4 going:
Me
TCarr (& Zelda) But she doesn't take up that much room
Saveum (Tommy G)
LD & the Pimpmobile!
Anyone else like to come?
So between Saveum and myself... we should "ghillie" for TCarr and LD.
I'll volunteer to help with any casting troubles.... but for the most part LD and TCarr have casting down pretty good.
It's going to be a slow nymphing and scud day to bring plenty of sub-surface patterns to include small buggers. I have plenty of split shot, Gink sink gel, and tungsten putty to share.
Should we quit and head back around 3pm? So you guys have enough time to still catch the Super Bowl?
On that note... lets talk about arrival times. TCarr my house at 7am? Hit New Albany by 0730? Load up and make it to Dushore by 8am to grab a coffee and pick up Tom at the mini-mart? We should be at the creek by 0945-10-ish? Fish for 5 or 6 hours and call it a day?
What time does the Super Bowl start? 7pm? 6pm?
The extended forecast says:
Sun
Feb 7
Snow Shower
21° low
32°F will feel good compared to our high of 4°F today!! But still wear your mittens!

A bit on the high side but I'll keep a close eye on the guages. I believe by next weekend the flows will be perfect. If a freak high water event happens between Saturday and Sunday, I'll contact you all and nix the trip. I don't think we want to fish that chocolate milk torrent like we did last time, right? |
I'm starting to get very excited about this trip. I'll be tying nymphs tonight! Maybe a few scuds too! I just got a pak of olive scudback and some Lightening Strike scud/emerger hooks in #14 and #16 I've been dying to try out.
I was waiting till the last minute to see ifn I could go on this trip, well as usual, my plans got checked, I now have to go to Erie, to see my kids going to college, then while the wife sits at a friends house, I have to take these two kids out on Lake Erie and go Ice fishing, gee, I feel really bad, now, fishing the big water, instead of a nice trout stream, short poles over long poles, I guess I have to accept it and just go see the kids. Gee life is good at throwing curves at times. Well you all have fun and hopefully you bring back some pictures of what you catch and I will try to do the same.
Dp- the time line looks about right to me. I would like to watch the super bowl with the wife. I'm going to try tying some scuds (with lead this time). Do you think tying up a crayfish would be worth while? I've got several hare's ear nymphs and they other stuff you have already seen. what other nymphs. I've got the one bead head that I got from you down on Bowman.
I don't think that a crayfish would be beneficial on this trip. Perhaps when it's warmer a crayfish could work.
I got ya covered on flies... if you need any.
Just general nymph patterns, PT nymphs, Hare's Ear... maybe a half dozen of wooly buggers.
Okay. I'll work on those. It's probably a good thing that you have backups for me.
I checked the USGS data gauges for SC at Houserville. Currently, at 0930 the cfs is 80. Which is a touch high but that good high where the trout have to make a split second decision to take your fly instead of being able to look it up and down and refuse it.
Normal flows are about 65-70 right now. (Just for reference the last time we fished it was 105-110cfs)
The CFS is dropping. Barring any significant water event over the next 72 hours we will be in good shape!
Weather wise... we are looking at a high of 25-28F with a mix of sun and clouds. Friday will have a warming day over freezing and Saturday will be a high of 29F. So the fish will get a little sun a few days before we come.
I've fished the SC in colder temps and have caught fish.... the water will be warmer than the air temps.
It will be good!

Down here in SC Pa., we are being told there is a winter storm warning through tomorrow night and some snow is expected. While I wouldn't let that derail the outing, keep in mind that it may make access a bit more of an issue. Plus, as weird as it sounds, be on the lookout for the small baetis......for whatever reason, crummy weather gets them going sometimes.
I am jealous.....I wish I was headed out. I am hoping to get over there for an afternoon in a couple weeks, I am going to keep an eye on the baetis situation.......
Just the same, nymphs should be the ticket. I hope you all have a great outing. If you smell cigar smoke, it won't be me this time!

Have fun guys!!! Can't wait for the report!!!
ACCU-GUESS WEATHER....
Seems like most of the snow is going to be south of Rt. 22 in Pa. and throughout the Virginias and North Carolina. We are however, expecting up to 12-18 inches if you go by the weather man. My guess......Spring Creek is going to fish just fine, and there will be about 6 inches of new snow on the ground....much like last January's outing. That being said, please be careful! (And post some pictures!)

The SC trip to Bellfonte had been cancelled. Due to JM performing the "Great White Blizzard Dance". A little birdie told me that Ore Hill is 22" Bedford Co. has 26" in spots. State College is 14"-16". Now the snowfall does not hurt the fishing at all. It's just the fact that you won't be able to get into the parking lots at the places you want to fish.
I watched the "snow plow" ballet today for most of the afternoon. At one point there were 4 of them out there, not counting the guy on the 4 wheeler, the tractor guy, and the township truck. It has become a spectator sport, complete with cheering fans, and spinning tires. This evening however, they came a plowed out my mailbox and moved some of the snow I had shoveled earlier in the day
Snowfall here exceeded 20 inches almost everywhere, and the award winner was Blue Knob.....32 inches on top of the ridge. I guess the freestone streams will have plenty of water for a while......and a barrier to keep everyone away!!!

Such a girlie-man. Let a little snow get in your way. Should of came over and borrowed my truck. You could of gotten anywhere you wanted to. LOL!!!
Such paltry things do not stop the Coldblooded Ice Warriors. A major difference between the men of the CIW and the girls of the DFP.
LMFAO!!!!!

DFP Cancels outing due to cold and snow.
But much like this young lady.....
Cold and Snow excites the men of the CIW!!! HA HA HA!!!!!!
Hey WE STILL FISHED TODAY... Didn't see you out there with us Seth?? You pussy! Still we, froze our freakin' lines and fingers to the bone. Nary a fish in hand but we had fun. I still can't believe we spent 2 hours in Gander... the time just flew by!
Gee sounds like a good trip, fishied and spent time buying things for the next trip. I will post pictures and report of my trip to Lake Erie tommorow,.
Not only did we fish but Dave broke thru the ice and did the Polar Bear! When was the last time the CIW went swimming on a trip? Okay maybe Dave looked more like one of the Grateful Dead dancing bears that spent a little too much time hanging out with Gerry Garcia than he did a Polar Bear, BUT the effort was there!
I will say my hand have not been THAT FREAKIN COLD, in very very long time. Grey's Run was pretty awsome though. Really made the day worth it.
