This summer I took my kids up to a little pond my friend has on his property.  No one has fished this place in about 15 years.  I knew the thing was full of blue gill and pumpkin seeds and I thought it would be fun to take the kids to see if I could get them interested in fishing.  So we go out on the dock and my daughter 7yrs. old starts casting out her new micro lite and I cast out with one of my poles.  I would have to sit down and then my 2yr old son would sit on my lap and reel in the line.  watching him reel was a hoot! He looked like he was deep sea fishing and hooked into a marlin.

My daughter caught a big pumpkin seed and then a lg mouth and then my son actually had a lg mouth jump on his hook.  He was jabbering as fast as he was reeling Daddy, Daddy, Daddy!  He caught a second one and my daughter hooked up at the same time.  They had their first double.  After, bouncing between the two and getting the fish back in the water, my boy had lost interest and decided to sit with his mother and have a snack.  My daughter continued to pull in the bass.

My wife and son went home and my daughter and I stayed a while longer and she pulled in a few more.  Things started to slow down and she was quiet for a few minutes.  Then she said, "I think I'm going to cast out two more times and then we can go." So, I said okay.  So she cast out and immediatly had a hook up.  I got the fish back in the water as she cast out for the second time and had an immediate hook up!  Well, that was twice and she sticks to what she says, so fish in the water and I start picking up gear.  My daughter asked me, How many fish did her brother catch.  I told her, two.  She asked how many fish did she catch, I told her one pumpkin seed and 11 bass.  Then the question that hurt! How many fish did you catch?  I told her none.  She was quiet for a minute and then said, "Well, if you want to you can tell people you caught some of the ones I caught."  What a SWEET HEART!  I told her that it was a very nice offer, but she caught the fish so she should be proud of her accomplishment.  I also told her that fishing isn't just about the fish, it's also about the time you spend with friends or family and sometimes it's good just to be alone with nature. She said, "Yeah, thats good, but I think I like being with you AND catching fish"! ..........smartass kid.
