Alternative to LE steel

Sometimes the LE Steel tribs gets socked in with a terrible amount of snow.  There is nothing like trying to fish while walking through 24" of snow.  One may want to try the tailwater section of the Allegheny River below the dam (near Warren).  The trout fishing is spectacular especially in December since the lake effluent is warmer over the spillway.  Massive browns live in this section 20" to 28+" trout are the norm.

I have only fished this tailwater 2 x's.  Both right around this time of the year and I loved it. You can call 814-726-0164 and get a Corps Of Engineers report on the tailwater flow. Some of the best fishing up there is in November & December.  Just thought I would pass this info along in case anyone is planning a trip to the "Erie Triangle" area.  You may not have to deal with as much snow and ice and the room rates on the "off season" are pretty good and not booked up.  You don't see the crowds (since they all go up to Elk and the 'nut) for steel.  Quiet times and big fish.  You can't beat that!

Just remember how big this water can be!  I agree, I have seen big fish taken out of the tailwater.......

The steelhead are all ready all up in Pulaski and the streams.  Been real cold up there so they are moving in early this year.

Is it the same in the PA tribs?

Yes.  We have had Steel in the tribs since the middle of Sept.

On an additional note...  if you want to catch Landlocked Atlantic Salmon in Pee-Aye...   look no further to Raystown Lake and it's tributaries.
In fact the PA State Record for Landlocked Atlantic Salmon was captured at Raystown Lake.  The LLA Salmonwas 17lb 2oz and it was caught in 2001 by Brain Keller of Altoona, PA

That wouldn't be too far for you would it, JM?
