Personal Instruction paid off.
I took a nice old gentleman out on Owego Creek this morning. I didn't fish (no NYS license) but I met him to help him learn basic flyfishing casting techniques. He got it down in 20 minutes! I selected one of my hand-tied fat black wooly buggers for him to cast and put a little piece of shot about 6" up from the fly. 3rd cast.... a 12" brown. I wanted to take his pic but he was too embarrassed to have his pic taken. He smiled and said, "I'm 76 years old, I shoulda learned how to do this when I was 26! I've missed out on this for 50 years... I guess it's better late then never."
Then I taught him the roll cast and steeple cast for when the backcast was too brushy. He picked up a 6" creek chub and another 10" brown.
His hour of personal instruction was up then... but I stayed around and watched him fish and offered a few pointers. I ended up giving him one of my flyboxes with some flies in it. All he had was a old tobacco tin and a few flies from K-Mart. He was pleased! Maybe I shoulda got a NYS license... the water was perfect and very fishy tonight. Temp was 56F and the water was glassy smooth. I didn't see any hatches but the fish were moving around and very active.
Hey DP I noticed on your site that your starting to offer those instruction fishing/tying classes. It looks like business is growing, keep it up.
Thanks man. It's just a natural progression of things. Remember, I have a 5 year plan and in year number 3 I open my own fishing shop. I'll need a few good fly guys that are handy with a good 5 wgt. Hint, Hint, clue, clue.
Haha, if you need a hand in anything let me know.
for now I could use a little feedback on my website. Should I change anything, delete anything... what do you think?
Not sure what I could offer, but if time permits next year, I would be more then willing to help at any show appearances your company makes.......
JM
I believe LD and I will be at the EarlyBird Sportman's Show in Bloomsburg this Jan '10. Other than that show... I'm looking into one that is in March.
Kevin of Just Fish Taxidermy will also be at my booth like last year. He can't get a booth of his own(too many taxidermist they said already) so he adds his fish mounts with mine for one hell of a great display. Dave We'll put your jigs beside those flies I'm trying to get rid of.
I'm not allowed to share a booth with another company, but I am allowed to sell fishing tackle, and since you guys are my sponsors there isn't a problem.
Lance, I can always put a pic of each of those flies you have on my website and sell them for you. I can sell them off "by each" or by a dozen. Let me know. Did Barney tie them all? Or did you get flies from other tyers as well?
Well, I hope the five year plan rolls ahead of schedule.
I can sit with you and go over the website anytime you want. There are a few changes I would make for easier browsing, but overall it is excellent.
Again, I will help out with anything I can.
And yeah, go get the NY license. You'll need it. Next we will be guiding. LOL!!!!
