Going after Muskies.....

When fishing for Muskies, your gonna need some action on your lure.  It has to keep the interest of probably one of the smartest fish you will ever try for.

Trophy Muskie are almost as old as the river, as they say.  They have seen everything thrown at them inlcuding everything else.

I have caught muskies before, so I know its not a lack of knowledge of tackle or bait (Maybe thats not true, but I did have GTN007 with me....).  What I am lacking is knowledge of where they like to hide, especially the big ones.

Now, this area is not known for its huge Muskies..... but as GTN007 will tell you.... there are a few big ones out there somewhere.

Something else GTN007 will tell you is: "The Musky is the fish of 1,000 casts or just luck."

I think I believe him.  We spent all morning trolling or drifting and casting up and down the Susqy in some prime spots, not a thing.  We each thought we got a couple taps each, but no action or head shakes.  Sad, but it wasn't supposed to be so nice this morning, so it was nice to be out there anyway.  Tried a bunch of different lures and found a few nice holes for cats.

Next time I will bring a second rod setup for bass.....

Overall it was a good day hunting for a Monster Muskie.

I see them like a "SNAKE ". The big snake it less frequent ( Hunger ) then the small ones. It prefers bigger meal or meals as it does eat but not as frequent as the small muskie. It has a nasty temper amd will strike out at certain noises , actions or colors. Not a opportunist as young fish are. This maybe what makes the famous  claim " fish of 1000 casts " but after all it is responding just like a big snake thats king or queen of its area.  Sometimes on a lake like Raystown (PA.)
we can see them in spring on the surface and they will be taken. Sometimes we see a musky just sulking near a dock or mid-lake in other lakes and they just don't bite. I believe its all part of what I believe in and thats called "Comfort Zone ". Find the zone and you will find active musky. No zone, no active musky!

Do you fish Raystown much?

I'd like to go after some stripers down there.

Not anymore. Before 7 pts. became a 4 lane road of traffic > It was the best location to try for all the fish. Right now till end of May the stripers are headed on a false run all the way up to Saxton area ( the Southern most end ) from all parts of the lake. Its not this good again till mid October or first frost for this big striper activity. October starts the fall hunt for shad and baitfish as the striper will be most active in the North end.   I was trying to sell my bayliner and I have used it lately for family tubing /skiing on Blue Marsh lake  PA. since gas last summer was $4 per gallon. Don't fish much off that boat anymore. I still spend most of my free time in a smaller boat mapping lakes and locating fish.

Speaking of muskies, I hooked a big one Sat on Cowanesque lake, never did see him, but had him on for 10 minutes, never made a fast run just back and forth, I had a Rapala broken back minnow on and when I set the hook thought I was snagged till it started going, finally it must of opened its mouth cause back came the Rapala, of course now it has big holes in it from the teeth, not torn up but just some holes.

I love when I get a lure back with teeth marks in it.  If its real tore up, it goes on the wall.  LOL!!!

I just don't like them fish with teeth tearing up my $6 and $8 bass lures, some lakes should have a bounty on them muskies, forget catch and release on them.
