While working along the Salmon River in September, the ECO for that region Gary Wilson received a anonymous complaint of a fisherman snatching salmon in an area known as the "Pulaski ball fields". The fisherman ignored warnings and blatantly bragged about his catching methods. The ECO working in plain clothes, undercover like, located the suspect and started fishing near him.It didnt take long for the ECO to witness his illegal snagging methods,he foul hooked a salmon. As the fisherman played the coho, the fisherman said"This would be a great one to eat." The suspect landed the fish and placed it on his stringer. While looking over his fish the ECO approached the fisherman and pulled out proof that he was in fact a ECO. The fisherman said "I know I kept a foul hooked fish, can you give me a break? The fisherman was charged by illegally taking a fish by snagging and possessing a foul hooked fish.He was taken into custody and arraingned at Richland Town Court. He was fined $200 bucks. This was off the DEC website online conservation magazine(sept issue.)

200 bucks? You do know you can save yourself the New York State Fishing License Fee and just go to Wegmans or Tops or any grocery store with a seafood section and buy yourself some fresh salmon. Save yourself the embarassment and the expensive dinner.

When Salmon fishing on the Salmon River during the spawning season, a foul hookup is inevitable.  For the fishes health, it is better to bring it in, clear the hook and release it.  The few times I have fished for Salmon, I have foul hooked 4 fish.  Each one was brought up, hook removed and released without ever leaving the water.  As for fairly caught salmon, there is nothing better than salmon sushi on the side of the river.  Other than that, I will take my limit home as I have friends and family that enjoy the catch stories as they eat the salmon.

Freshly caught salmon will also work wonders with the surgeons at the Guthrie.  I promised my surgeons Salmon steaks and I got the 1st class treatment for my entire stay.  My neurologist flew his wife in from Colorado for a nice Salmon dinner when I told him I was going to fish for his salmon.  He and his wife enjoyed the fresh salmon steaks and I was healed.

God made salmon for man to eat.... and its my favorite fish to catch and eat.

Obviously, the guy above was an ass.

Here comes the debate...   Not that i am justifying what he was doing buutttt.................  Once salmon enter the stream there stomachs shut down... How are you sopposed to fish for a fish that doesnt eat??   There are many tactics to get a fair hooked fish.. But how do you do that?? Well we call them flossers,  When you make a drift your line just happens to go into their mouth and you lift at the end of your drift hooking up... Yes you got them in the mouth.. But it doenst mean they hit it!!   I have seen guides fishing with these little TINY black stone flys..  At first i see this and think they are hitting them so i bought a few and gave it a wirl... Well i found out for myself that in fact they werent hitting them, they were just so damn small the the fish wouldnt spook and you can drift it right into their mouth.. Fish on!  And i must say that a flyrod is the BEST tool you can have to "floss" fish!!  And you dont get your like tangled up in your reel like you would a spinning outfit.. So the tool of choice to snag salmon is a flyrod!! And thats what most people use up there! IMO   Not with floating line just straight mono...
If you actually think that they are biting then use the same technique with a bare hook... You will have the same results.. Right in the corner of the mouth...

Oh and another thing about the local economy up there is.... They welcome the snaggers into town.. they get hit on the river by the GW go see the judge who is wearing shorts under his robe.. Get the 100 or 200 dollar fine and get sent right back down to the river to fish/snag some more!! The courthouse is a revolving door up there during salmon season and its not that they care about the samon (They are ALL going to dies anyways)  Its all about the money!!!!  Now when it comes to their steelies that is a whole nother ballgame up there!!!
